Ross, check out the Vehicle Miles of Travel Trends in Minnesota: 1992-2009: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/traffic/data/reports/2009%20VMT%20Report.pdf. While the report doesn't go back 30 years, it does look at VMT and population, noting that since 2004 individuals in Minnesota are driving less.
It would be interesting to see how VMT has increased relative to population over the last 30 years. Likewise what has happened to SOV use and car pooling.
Jamie,
Check out the 2009 transportation performance report, which is full of data on system performance as well as basic descriptive stats on transportation modes: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/measures/pdf/PerformanceReportLowRes.pdf
Also, Bike Walk Twin Cities recently published their 2010 bike/walk counts from the metro area at: http://bit.ly/gvljLB
Can you publish data from which all these questions were derived? Having a snapshot/overview of Minnesota's transportation infrastructure would be great!
Hilary, that's a great suggestion. We'll add a question about size relative to other states to a future quiz.
