Video and poll: Sustainable community design?

  • 1.

Neckar states that sustainable urban development will require altering our present land use and transportation patterns. In other words, we'll need to better understand and accommodate natural systems into our communities as we design (or redesign) them. What should future land use and transportation systems look like if they are to be more sustainable?

    Recent answers given:
    • Development will be more concentrated. Less land space will be paved/built over. Our urban geenspace will be protected and possibly expanded. Wind and solar resources will be prioritized in design and planning.

emphasis will be put on maintaining and improving the quality of water and land. Mixed use organic farming with both crops and livestock will be promoted, with monoculture agriculture being de-emphasized.

transportation systems will be designed to efficently allow people to travel to the new mall equivalents where they can access multiple resources with fewer trips. Integration of business, retail, production and transportation. More emphasis on walking and biking (when weather permits) as well as mass transit options.

Accessibility for all ages is a key component of good community design. Good design can allow us to age in place, remain independent, and stay active in our communities for our entire lives. Additionally, it can encourage youth to get out and explore, and be physically active. What age-friendly features will be needed in an urban center of the future?

    Recent answers given:
    • Urban centers will need clustered resources for aging baby boomers over the nest 30 years so that they can walk and take transit to meet their needs. children will need green space, safe streets and access to healthy food and acitivities. integration of housng with green space will be important, as will a reduction in employemnt and income gaps.
